Check what is using the laptop
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). Sort by CPU, Memory and Disk. One app using most of the resources, or a disk stuck at 100%, tells you where to look. Close or uninstall what you do not need.
Cut the startup load
In Task Manager, open the Startup tab and disable programs you do not need at start. Keep your antivirus and drivers.
Free up storage
A drive that is almost full slows Windows down. Delete large unused files, empty the Recycle Bin and move photos and videos to an external drive.
Scan for malware
Run a full scan with Windows Security. Unknown programs, browser pop-ups and a laptop that is busy when you are doing nothing can point to malware. Avoid cracked software and unknown flash drives.
Heat: dust, vents and use
Laptops pull air through narrow vents. Over time, dust blocks them. Signs are a loud fan, a very hot base and sudden slowdowns. Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface, not on a bed or sofa. Cleaning the fan and replacing dried thermal paste can bring temperatures down. This needs opening the laptop, so a technician should do it.
Hardware upgrades that help
- SSD instead of a hard drive gives the biggest speed-up on older laptops.
- More RAM helps if you keep many apps and browser tabs open.
Check what your model supports before buying parts.
When to bring it in
If the laptop shuts down on its own, the fan runs at full speed all the time, or it is slow even after a clean start, bring it for a check. Shutdowns from heat can damage the board.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my laptop so hot?
Blocked vents, a dusty fan, dried thermal paste, heavy apps and soft surfaces are the common causes.
Will an SSD make my old laptop faster?
In most cases, yes. Starting and opening programs are much quicker with an SSD than with an old hard drive.
Should I reinstall Windows to fix a slow laptop?
Sometimes, but try the simple steps first and back up your files. A slow laptop can also have a hardware cause, like a failing drive.
This guide is general advice. Every device and business is different, so if you are unsure, ask a technician before you act.
